OUR SALOON |
| A GHOST STORY | |
| Pioche's
violent past has undoubtedly created its fair share of spirits, left to
wander aimlessly about through long-abandoned mining camps, perhaps searching
for sustenance in any of the 72 saloons that once existed here. Maybe this explains why several guests and locals have reported seeing the occasional ghost floating around the Overland Hotel. Apparently one of these friendly specters is an old miner, while the other is a "madame" (picture above?), who was perhaps last in corporeal form during the Overland's former incarnation as a bordello. |
In Pioche's earliest days, the fondest welcome
a road-weary traveler was likely to receive was at the local saloon. After
almost a century and a half in these parts, little has changed. Enter our
saloon and you'll not only be greeted warmly by our staff, you'll be able
to reach out and touch nearly 150 years of history. Rest your drink upon our mahogany Brunswick bar (circa 1868), then feast your eyes upon the centerpiece of our saloon: our stunning back bar, a true relic of a bygone age. Built in England in 1863 out of solid cherrywood, this hand-carved gem was soon shipped around Cape Horn to the Barbary Coast (San Francisco). A survivor of the 1906 earthquake, the back bar was eventually moved to the eastern Nevada boomtown of Kimberly in 1913. Shipped to Pioche in 1948, the back bar found its final home in the then-new Overland Hotel, which had risen from the ashes of the 1947 fire that had devastated much of Pioche. It's not all antiques in our saloon, though. Test your luck at the latest and greatest in video gaming. Our "lucky thirteen" video poker machines are some of the loosest in Lincoln County! |
