ACTIVITIES

The Million Dollar Courthouse •  69 Lacour St, Pioche NV •  (775) 962-5182

Our primary tourist attraction is the fascinating Million Dollar Courthouse, which was originally constructed at the height of Pioche's mining productivity to deal with an overwhelming tide of criminal activity in this once lawless area. This sturdy brick edifice earned it's nickname thanks to cost overruns, graft, and bond interest that inflated the $16,400. originally set aside for the project in 1872 to an astounding $1,000,000. by the time the final bond was retired in 1936.
Now fully restored and open to the public, this must-see structure, full of wonderful exhibits and memorabilia, is only a short stroll away from the Overland Hotel.
Open: April-October, 10am-4pm      Admission: FREE
Lincoln County Museum •  69 Main St, Pioche NV •  (775) 962-5207

Another of Pioche's little known attractions is the Lincoln County Museum, which provides an interesting journey back to our area's lively past. Interactive mining and geologic exhibits and well-preserved antiquities from nearly 150 years of county history are here. A portion of the museum demonstrates how the inside of a respectable 19th century Pioche home might have been arranged, with original furnishings and momentos donated by the ancestors of one of our town's prominent pioneer families.
A "walking map" of Pioche, which outlines all the other interesting historic sites in and around our town, is available here. Donations are gladly accepted from all museum visitors; your help in keeping Lincoln County history alive is much appreciated!
From the Overland Hotel, the Lincoln County Museum is only a brief walk up Pioche's historic Main Street.
Open: All Year (major holidays excluded), 10am-4pm      Admission: FREE

The Historic Silver Cafe •  97 Main St, Pioche NV •  (775) 726-3215      Map     Menu

While many other Pioche restaurants have come and gone, The Historic Silver Café has stood the test of time for one simple reason: mouthwatering American "comfort food" served up on the cheap. All three daily meals are offered here, with breakfast a real winner. Dinner entreés range from $8.95 to $14.95 (click above link for complete menu in .pdf format), and the nightly dinner specials are legendary.
Housed in a building which dates back to 1907, the Silver Café has been in continuous operation since the late 1920's, surviving Pioche's halcyon Wild West era, the Great Depression, and the notorious boom/bust mining cycles endemic to this region. Proprietors Sal and Barbie Cammarano are the latest in a surprisingly small roster of owners here.
Conveniently located directly across Pioche's quaint Main Street from the Overland Hotel, there's no excuse to miss out on a meal at this landmark diner.
Hansen's Fine Dining •  127 N Spring St, Caliente NV •  (775) 726-3215
Directions from The Overland Hotel (25 miles)

Lincoln County's lone fine dining option, Hansen's offers an intimate, cottage-like setting replete with interesting relics and mementos from more than a century of Nevada history.
Quality and value are the watchwords here. Owner Shirley Hansen strives to keep the food standards high and portions generous. The savory freshness is evident from first bite to last. Entreés range from $9.95 to $16.95 (click here for complete menu), and the board of fare at this dinner-only restaurant reflects some Continental and Asian influences as well as a reasonable selection of American dinner favorites.
Those who stopping by for lunch or wanting lighter fare can stop by Pioneer Pizza, or wander in for a drink at the Hideaway, both adjacent to Hansen's and owned/operated by the same family for over a decade.

Lincoln County is well known and highly regarded as an outdoor enthusiast's paradise. Hunters migrate to our area annually for the chance to bag their limit of elk, antelope, deer, cougar, dove and sage grouse. For more information on hunting in Nevada, click here.
Fishing opportunities also abound in these parts. Fill your creel with rainbow and brown trout, largemouth bass, crappie, and bullhead catfish. For more information on fishable waters in our area, click here.
Those that prefer to simply watch wildlife in their natural habitat will find plenty of bird watching and photographic opportunities in our area as well.

Let the Overland Hotel provide a warm welcome or "welcome back" from your outdoor adventures. We provide plenty of parking for RV's, boat trailers, and all your gear. Our bartenders even promise to empathize with your party's hunting and fishing tales, including "the one(s) that got away" (beer, wine, or liquor purchase required).

Let's face it; anyone can build a golf course if they have a few million bucks to throw around. Try getting the job done with about twenty grand on hand.
That's exactly what Richard and Peggy Decker have done. With the help of their son Lee, fellow Piocheans Carol and Don Shanks, other town and county residents, donated labor, equipment and materials, this septuagenarian couple have literally carved out a nine-hole layout from lightly rolling terrain laden with junipers, pinyon pines and prickly native shrubbery.
The result is a 1,656 yard, par 29 course (scorecard) that is about as raw and unadorned as you might expect. The fairways are plain ol' dirt, while the tee boxes and greens are, for the most part, small patches of fine "reject" sand spread atop the native soil. It's not all brown out here though; the pride and joy of the local golfing community are three new Astroturf greens, with another two or three planned for installation in 2004.
Golfers who want to tee it up here are advised to bring a small swatch of Astroturf or carpet, upon which their golf ball may be placed when teeing off and while on the fairway. "Local rules", such as they are, are fairly liberal when it comes to using your carpet swatch while in the sagebrush, although regular players usually refer to errant shots as being in "hard luck country", meant to be played as the ball lays.
Future improvements at this course, most notably the addition of real grass to the fairways and greens, depend largely on the influx of cash from fundraisers and other donations, earmarked for the purchase of irrigation equipment. In the meantime, the Deckers hope to have all nine greens surfaced with Astroturf and a rudimentary clubhouse completed within the next two to three years.
Those players who visit the course with the proper lighthearted spirit of adventure may well be surprised to discover just how fun a round out here can be. There is no set green fee, however a donation box is provided, with all proceeds reinvested into course upgrades.
The Lincoln County Golf Course in many ways embodies the pure spirit of Nevada, built with a tireless, pioneering élan that is surely worthy of support. Feel free, if you dare, to beat my course record of 33 (+4), which may not sound impressive until you try to make a putt of more than twelve inches out here. Good luck.

Caliente NV •  (775) 726-3564

(about 60 mi. SE on US-93)

Beaver Dam, Eastern Nevada's most remote state park, is a popular area for hikers and nature enthusiasts who enjoy its primitive and rustic character. Deep canyons, pinion and juniper forests, a flowing stream and a small reservoir are the primary features, offering fishing, camping, picnicking, hiking, photography and nature study.

Cathedral Gorge S.P.

(about 11 mi. S on US-93)

Cathedral Gorge is located in a long, narrow valley where erosion has carved dramatic and unique patterns in the soft bentonite clay. Trails abound for exploring the cave-like formations and cathedral-like spires. Miller Point, a scenic overlook just north of the park entrance on U.S. 93, offers excellent views of the scenic canyon. Shaded picnic areas and campground are open all year.

Echo Canyon S.P.
Pioche NV •  (775) 962-5103
(about 12 mi. E on SR-322 & 323)

Echo Canyon State Park offers a 65-acre reservoir with a campground, picnic area, group use facilities and boat launch. The park is popular for camping, fishing, hiking and enjoying the beautiful scenery of eastern Nevada. Abundant wildlife, a wide variety of native plants and unique rock formations make exploration a favorite activity.

Spring Valley S.P.
